Being a stilt home, the ground floor is the full size
of the house and includes a two car garage with 9’
doors (not the normal 8’), a workshop, boat
equipment storage area, kitchenette area with sink,
refrigerator and microwave, plus a game room with
a pool table. (The pool table can be left, or we can
take it with us).
The house is supported on concrete pillars with
reinforcing bar and vibrated concrete fill. Unlike
most stilt homes in this area, the cross beams are
prestressed concrete, not wood beams.
The staircase to the first floor is contained within
the building, it is not an outside staircase. When
driving up to the house, you open the garage with
the garage door remote operator and drive inside.
If you have groceries they go into a dumbwaiter
which lifts them directly up into the first floor
utility room, one of two pantry storage areas, while
you go up the air conditioned staircase. If you are
a visitor, the door bell is on a video camera at the
front door. You can talk to the visitor while you
watch him, from either the garage or first floor.
The garage is equipped with a carbon monoxide
detector/alarm unit.
Also in the garage is a 3000 Watt standby
generator.
An elevator location is available, but we never had
the need to install one.
The prevailing wind is from the west, coming in
from the Gulf. Opening the garage door a bit and
the sliding glass door out to the dock, will almost
always guarantee a comfortable space to be in, even
in the summer.
